If you thought you missed out on Houston Restaurant Weeks 2020, you’re in luck! One of the most popular charitable events in the city – originally slated to end on September 7th – has been extended though the entire month of September.

About Houston Restaurant Weeks

Houston Restaurant Weeks is the largest annual fundraiser for America’s largest food bank, the Houston Food Bank. The multi-week dining extravaganza features specially priced brunches, lunches, and dinners at restaurants across the Greater Houston area.

Houston Restaurant Weeks (HRW) was established in 2003 by Cleverly Stone, a local food talk radio host and food segment contributor. A vocal food security advocate and restaurant supporter, Cleverly managed the city of Houston’s largest fundraiser I had the honor of meeting Cleverly many years ago, and she was. Cleverly passed away in May 2020 and her daughter Katie will continue leading Houston Restaurant Weeks in her honor.

Things are a bit different this year.

Houston Restaurants Weeks 2020 kicked off August 1st to run through Labor Day. However, the HRW team just announced the event is extended through the entire month of September.

For each Houston Restaurant Weeks meal purchased, participating restaurants will donate raised funds to the Houston Food Bank. In the past, HRW menu options generated $3-7 per meal. However, COVID-19 devastated the restaurant industry, so the new HRW benefit structure includes a $1 per meal benefit to the Houston Food Bank – that’s 3 meals for every meal purchased!

Now, more than ever, is a great time for Houstonians (and visitors) to embrace our local restaurants and support our local food bank. There are dine in, takeout and delivery options available for supporters to pick the option that best suits their needs.

Black Girl Meets World Tips for Houston Restaurant Weeks 2020

Houston Restaurants Weeks is one of my favorite events, because I get to try new restaurants at an affordable price – the max HRW dinner menu is $45 for a three course meal. Through the years, I’ve found that planning ahead makes navigating HRW a lot easier, so here are a few tips:

  • Browse the Menu Search Maps for participating restaurants – you can search by restaurant name, cuisine, menu price, zip code and neighborhood!
  • Check for to-go and delivery options – there’s still a pandemic happening.
    • If dining out, make reservations when available.
  • Bring a friend – my friends and I opt to order different options from the menu so we can experience the full HRW menu.
  • Take advantage of upgrades – some restaurants offer menu upgrades for additional costs. It’s still a great deal and value!
  • Tip your waitstaff!

My Recommendations for Houston Restaurant Weeks 2020

I’ll admit that I’m a bit late to the HRW activities this year, so the extension was JUST for me. At least that’s what I’ll tell myself! I combed through the list of 241 participating restaurants and got excited to see a few of my faves and lots of restaurants saved on my “Want to Visit” list.
