If you follow me on Instagram, it’s no surprise that Lucille’s is one of my favorite restaurants, so this review is admittedly overdue. I’ve been a fan since the restaurant opened in the heart of Houston’s museum district in 2012. Lucille’s regularly claims its spot on all the popular restaurant lists (and for good reason,) so here’s my rundown on the BGMW top picks.

Note: Some of the content in this post was created prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, so items featured may no longer be available or may be presented differently.

Starters

Lucille’s Famous Chili Biscuits

You can’t go to Lucille’s and NOT order the famous chili biscuits! Chef Chris Williams’ great-grandmother Lucille B. Smith is a legendary entrepreneur and chef who invented the first hot biscuit mix. These days, the tiny biscuits are served with house chili and a delicious harissa cream sauce.

Fried Green Tomatoes

Fried Green Tomatoes are a classic Southern appetizer. The unripened tomatoes are coated in a seasoned cornmeal, deep fried, then topped with creamy goat cheese and a spicy aioli.

If you’re lucky the Fried Green Tomatoes Alphise may be available when you visit. The brainchild of Chef Alphise (Davis St at Hermann Park), this off-menu creation takes the classic fried green tomatoes and tops them with juicy shrimp and andouille sausage.

Brunch Faves

The brunch at Lucille’s is amazing! On a good weather day, brunch on the patio with the live band and a carafe of the sangria makes for a perfect Sunday Fun-day. I’ve essentially tried everything, but here are two of my favorite items from Lucille’s brunch menu.

Croissant French Toast

Lucille’s remixes the brunch staple with buttery croissants and they’re so rich and delicious. While I prefer savory brunch dishes, I regularly order the croissant french toast, because it’s that good. If you’re feeling real provocative, add the chicken wings!

Oxtail Omelette

An oxtail omelette is the brunch collaboration I didn’t know I needed! This BGMW fave is filled with tender oxtail meat, cheddar cheese then topped with a caramelized onions and surrounded with the savory oxtail au jus.

Dinner Spotlight

Braised Oxtails

These oxtails are some of the best in the city! I’ve ordered this dish a dozen times, and the oxtails are always perfect. The acid from the roasted capanota cuts through the richness of the oxtail au jus and creamy Serrano cheddar grits. It’s truly Southern comfort on a plate.

Final Thoughts on Lucille’s Houston

Even though the COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented changes to the restaurant industry, Chef Chris pivoted in a ways that will hopefully allow Lucille’s to weather the storm. In the midst of all of this, Lucille’s had the opportunity to host former Vice President Joe Biden and the family of George Floyd. Read more about that experience directly from Chef Chris Williams on Life and Thyme.

Chef Chris and his team are doing amazing things at Lucille’s Houston, so it’s at the top of my Black Girl Meets World recommendation list when people ask me for Houston restaurant recommendations. Be sure to stop by this Museum District hotspot and checkout one of my favorite Backyard Gems.
