Good Eats: Dinner at Davis Street – Houston, TX

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Located near Houston’s Museum District, Davis Street at Hermann Park is most known for their Gulf Coast cuisine with inspiration from global destinations ranging from Oaxaca to Thailand.

Chef Mark Holley and his team are an absolute Black Girl Meets World’s Backyard Gem when the occasion calls for fine dining and Southern hospitality. Seriously, Davis Street is special.

It’s not uncommon for Chef Holley to greet you at the wall-to-wall wine case with a boisterous welcome, as if you were one of his close friends stopping by for a meal.

Fondly named after the condominiums next door to the restaurant, this cocktail is a refreshing blend of Monkey Shoulder whisky , Lime juice, Aromatic Bitters, and topped with Ginger Beer.

The Penthouse View

Prefer something sweet and fruity? Try The Penthouse View, a refreshing mix of Cucumber-Infused vodka, pear syrup, lemon Juice and my favorite mineral water – Topo Chico.

There’s also a Sommelier on-site to make carefully curated wine recommendations to pair with anything you order.

First Couse and Starters

If you’re a seafood lover, you’ll find so many selections to start your dining adventure with. From caviar service to seafood towers, your choice of East Coast or Gulf Coast raw oysters, and various ceviche, the seafood world is yours.

It’s no secret I can’t/don’t eat seafood, but all my plus ones do, and they support Black Girl Meets World by reviewing the popular seafood dishes when I review a restaurant. With that said, my best friend told me to tell you Davis Street’s NOLA-style charbroiled oysters are “ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!”

Entrees

Grilled Lamb Chops

Has any other protein had a better year than lamb chops? I love lamb chops and am glad they’re popping up on menus. Davis Street’s grilled lamb chops are topped with chimichurri and served with a watercress-apple salad, roasted gold potatoes, and a zesty yogurt-mint crème.

Vivian’s Truffle Mac and Cheese

Is it a Southern restaurant if there’s not a decadent baked mac and cheese available? Davis Street sides are meant to share.

It’s the Dessert for me.

I LOVE Davis Street’s Down South cake! Love, love, love! I’ve definitely pulled up just to order a slice of one of my all-time favorite desserts.

Nobody: [silence]

Me: Let’s go to Davis Street and get some cake.

The coconut cake is soft and buttery, and bursting with salted caramel and coconut flakes and studded with spiced pecans.

Final Thoughts on Davis Street

Chef Holley is a gem to Houston’s culinary scene, and Davis Street is the epitome of fine dining with a familial welcome. You don’t find that kind of hospitality often, so when you do, you want it to be a permanent fixture in your foodie life. I’m so glad they re-opened and that it’s just as magical as I remembered.

Whether Happy Hour, Brunch or Dinner, be sure to check out this Museum District hotspot. Don’t forget to order the coconut cake!
